Trip to the Pharm

Updated: Jan 28, 2020

In the UK we are extremely lucky to have the NHS. For those elsewhere that’s the National Health Service. Not only does it provide free healthcare for those living in the UK, according to Wikipedia it is the 5th largest employer in the world giving jobs to around 1.7m people.

The majority of what the NHS provides for is physical health. However, in recent years there’s been a lot of noise about the increased burden on the NHS’s Mental Health system. I am not qualified nor sufficiently knowledgeable to start getting in the detail as to why or where from. What is interesting to me is the way in which mental health is viewed.

We can lambast the social media companies, the advertising companies, the leavers, the remainers, the EU, Boris, Jeremy…..whatever. Yet the main point of all of these things is that they are external to you and to your world. We choose to let them in.

All of these things – be it our emotional turmoil of leaving the EU, our FOMO at someone else doing something because it’s been crafted on social to be ‘a thing’, or the person at work who seems oh so confident and popular – we can choose to let them into our world or simply let them float by.

Overwhelm can be stressful. Get a person down. We could post stuff on social and pray for some comments and likes to feed our dopamine itch. At best this is temporary because we then have to do it again – and again – and again. Keep coming up with more and more stuff to broadcast that (and PLEASE GOD LET IT BE!) good enough to get a positive reaction from the world.

So what do we do in this day of medicine? We go to the docs and get some happy pills. Not every GP will do so – there’s a lot more out there for alternative solutions to get the serotonin flowing again than Faverin or Seroxat. Read on to find out…

I am going to sound rather old school here but there was a time when, if little Johnny did well at school, that we didn’t phone everyone in the phone book and tell them. And conversely, we didn’t hear of everyone else’s little ones awesome accolades and have to gush, ‘like’ (or emoji) it.

Prior to the internet there were people who invited friends round to see their holiday photos on a carousel projector which was then mocked in comedy shows such as this from Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsbPjE5oI_U. Yet here we are all doing it. All the time. With everything.

Think about it. If leaving the EU is so awful will ranting about it make a difference? If John & Jane Doe are off skiing will watching their vids and pics make a difference? And if someone else child who you barely know gets Star of the Week will this make them a future Prime Minister or CEO and make your child any less loved and loving?

If it is all a bit much then a take a break. Here’s a few ideas…

  1. Regular exercise everyday – doesn’t have to be loads but make time for it.

  2. Spend time in nature – combine with exercise, what’s not to like?

  3. Meditation – just 5 minutes daily to clear your mind.

  4. Gratitude – recall each morning at least things to be thankful for (I include my bed as one of these).

  5. Nutrition – check out what you’re eating versus what can naturally boost your serotonin

  6. Essential oils – lavender on your pillow, orange oil in a diffuser and Original Source bath stuff. I love orange oil.

  7. Goal achievement – work out (on your own or with a coach) what your goals, your route to attainment and knock them down.

  8. Happy memories – recall them and make them. Spend time with family and friends to reminisce.

  9. Novelty – do something different (see first blog ‘Muster at the first post’

  10. Get a life coach

A Life Coach will consult and advise you on everything above. The advantage to a coach, or any mentor, is we are here for you without bias or judgement and work out the route through the fog to find your place of happy. Be that career happy, personal happy, or both.
